The housing project for Light House/Heavy House is located at the entry to Chinatown and Downtown, a gateway to the heart of L.A. From the site, downtown is very visible and influential in the shaping of the project.
The project itself uses the Habitat by Moshe Safdie as the premise for it’s built form. The actual siting of the clusters of housing are shaped around an inner open area that is the private space of the site. The public part of the site encompasses a playing field, a gymnasium, a pool, and other recreational areas at the lower level with the community center and the retail spaces at the same level as Broadway. Along the very important Broadway is the entry to the lower level of the site with the community center and a few retail spaces flanking both sides of the entry created a rhythm that was carried along Broadway with the positioning of the housing as well. The housing along Broadway has windows that are positioned towards the incoming traffic to downtown. The south side of the site, as well as the largest cluster, have windows that are situated to take advantage of the view of downtown. The clusters themselves are stacks of per mutated configurations of an “L” shape. The arrangement of these provided for the placement of elevators and the creation of corridors that look out to different parts of the site and it’s surrounding areas.
