Venice volume5 Study Abroad Programs - Italy

University of Virginia -  School of Architecture

This summer program involves the study of Italian architecture, art and landscape architecture within the Veneto region of Italy. The program includes field trips, lectures, drawing and a sketch design problem. Instructors are from the University of Virginia and Italy.

Cost; 
Fixed costs include the program fee, room and board (breakfast only), and
field trips (bus and hotel accommodations), which total approximately $4,000. Variable costs include meals ($1700), airfare ($900) and personal expenses ($900), totaling approximately $3,500. Eating out is expensive in Italy; costs can be controlled by dining at the Convitto. Airfare quoted is based on current prices. You may be able to reduce the cost by taking a charter flight.Students will share rooms on the third floor of the Convitto S.F. Neri in Vicenza.

Time; Summer in Vicenza The program is seven weeks in duration from approximately June 18 to August 5, 1998. There will be no academic credit other than an optional 3 credits awarded in the fall after submission of an independent study project.

Level of Study;The program is open to all students in the School of Architecture with preference given to undergraduate students who are finishing their third year.

Pratt in Venice

Pratt in Venice offers a unique curriculum that combines art history with studio art. The six-week program gives students the opportunity of studying Venetian art on site. Many field  trips and site visits allow students to view the works first hand, and t o engage in discussions that consider formal issues, materials and  techniques, inconography, and context. Highlights include a visit to Murano to study early mosaics and a trip to Villa Maser and Bassano in the countryside north of Venice.
The Villa Heriott on the Giudecca, location of the Universita` Internazionale dell'Arte is the site of a small library, lecture and seminar  rooms for art history and materials/techniques, and studios for painting and special studies, while printmaking facilities are at the Scuola Grafica on the Grand Canal. Pratt in Venice students enjoy entree to a rich array of libraries, museums, laboratories, churches, and palaces. Seven graduate or undergraduate credits, or non-credit.

Offered by the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (CALA).

CALA offers its students the opportunity to spend spring quarter studying analytical and architectural design overseas. CALA coordinates the program and a faculty member accompanies the group. Program begins with travel to different cities in Italy, and the remainder of the term is spent in Venice. Offered in collaboration with the Global Campus.

Curriculum and Credit
The following courses are usually offered: Architectural Studio, Structures, Topics in History, Landscape Planning and Design Studio, and Directed Study in Landscape Architecture Design. Check with CALA for exact course listing. Typical course load is 14 quarter credits. All courses offered at graduate level.

Cost;
Cost and Housing 1997: $3,350. Optional $550 fee for program housing. Most housing is arranged for the group. Cost includes tuition and registration fees (contact CALA for other inclusions). Airfare, meals and personal expenses additional.

Financial aid may be applied to study abroad, and a variety of other financial resources are available, including scholarships, travel grants and reduced fees.

Level of Study; Intended for UofM graduate students in Architecture and Landscape Architecture programs.
